We as a society seem to be busier than ever. The kids have school and extra activities, there’s work to get done, the home needs help, and the errands are never-ending. We’re either sitting at a desk too long or standing too much. There’s no time to deal with being in pain, why not just take a painkiller? This quick-fix mentality has been generating long-lasting consequences all across the country. America is experiencing a painkiller epidemic. That’s one of the reasons we need to understand more about holistic healing and how chiropractic care is more effective than painkillers at relieving pain.
The Problem with Painkillers
In 2014, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that doctors wrote 259 million prescriptions for painkillers in a single year, that’s enough for every adult in the U.S.to have their own bottle of pills.
Many times these prescriptions are not really necessary to begin with. Chiropractic care is more effective in dealing with the patient as a whole. Chiropractors are concerned about what’s happening in the body and know that masking pain with drugs can often make it impossible to find its true source.
The painkillers made today are stronger than ever which provides a “quicker fix,” but comes with a much higher risk. The CDC has also reported that almost 50 Americans die from an overdose of prescription painkillers every. single. day.
Overdose and addiction are not the only problem with painkillers. Even when taken as prescribed, painkillers always come with a list of possible side effects, ranging from minor to fatal. They can leave patients with more problems than they started with. Prescription pills are not the only painkillers that come with dangers. An overdose of over-the-counter pills, like ibuprofen or aspirin, is harder to notice but can have long-term effects.
Painkillers only deal with symptoms of an issue and do nothing to actually treat the affected area. A holistic approach to health should have a goal in mind for ultimate healing. An ever refilling prescription of pills does not accomplish this.
Why Chiropractic Care is more Effective than Painkillers
The goal of chiropractic care when there is chronic pain or an injury is to restore the body to optimal health. This means to not only restore the body to the previous state before the ailment started, but to continue improving on the body’s health overall. Chiropractors aren’t looking to temporarily fix a problem. They want to guide the body back to the point of healing itself. Imagine if no drugs were needed to deal with migraines, chronic neck and back pain, and other injuries.
While painkillers wear-off after a few hours, the benefits of chiropractic care keep improving after the adjustment and over time. Chiropractic care is more effective than painkillers at relieving pain long-term because the process is actually healing the body. This can also prevent further injury. Pain is an important part of the healing process. It’s our body’s way of telling us there’s something wrong; however, it’s not the first marker of a problem. Painkillers simply mask pain which can result in more extensive injury. The patient may push their body too hard when they are pain free. Knowing chiropractic care is more effective at determining underlying issues can keep patients from experience more debilitating conditions down the road.
